Al passed away this afternoon. The photo above is the last time I saw him. May 1st in Portland, Oregon for his solo exhibition at Blue Sky Gallery. The work was a bittersweet monument to Al's life. He was a master printer of black and white photography when the art of printing was starting to fade into oblivion. I'm still processing the news of his loss.

I've known Al since elementary school and am writing an article about his Jewish summer camp photographs. I last saw him at his opening of them in Philadelphia, though we emailed & talked on the phone a lot. He joked around that in the little author bio at the end of the article, I should say that "Parsons and Winn met and began their professional relationship in kindergarten." (!!!!) His sense of humor and his optimism until the end were remarkable, & I miss him deeply. It's hard to talk about him in the past tense.
